Movies to watch out for in 2008

Bhoothnath

Amitabh Bachchan has an appetite for treading in areas that no one will dare to enter. In BR Film's Bhoothnath you would find him turning into a troubled ghost who develops a close bond with a child. Directed by Vivek Sharma, this unusual film also stars Shah Rukh Khan in a special guest appearance. If the picture above tells a tale, then this Men-n-Child-in-Black flick truly promises something different in the year ೨೦೦೮

Maan Gaye Mughal E Azam

Can Mallika Sherawat be compared with morning-dew-fresh Madhubala? Well, 'Murder' babe is trying to realize her 'Khwahish' for she is all set the sway to Anu Malik's version of the classic Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya in writer-director Sanjay Chel's unusually titled Maan Gaye Mughal E Azam. Mallika plays a theatre artiste, Rahul Bose a CBI officer, Kay Kay Menon a Ghazal singer and Paresh Rawal....Well....he has achieved the distinction of being the highest paid actor in this comic flick. Get ready for Sanjay Chel style jugglery-with-alfaaz! Maan Gaye....

Krazzy 4

Starring Arshad Warsi, Irfan Khan, Suresh Menon and Rajpal Yadav, Krazzy 4 is Rakesh Roshan's foray in Production without holding the directorial baton. Superhit son Hrithik is turning an item boy with this film for he will sizzle to one of Uncle Rajesh Roshan's groovy tracks. This Raja Sen directed comedy promises to push the envelope when it comes to delivering sensible humour. Let's wait-n-watch (out) for these Krazzy folks!

Main Yuvraj

Subhash Ghai, the Pied Piper of Indian Cinema is zealously working on his next directorial venture Main Yuvraj starring Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan. The opulent grandeur in the First Look of the film is simply stunning. Even though you're merely looking at the picture, but you could easily hear Rahman's symphonic mellifluous brilliance filling your ears. And, who's the Yuvraj? Well, that's the mystery Ghai wants you guys to unravel. Definitely one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year.

Dulha Mil Gaya

If a film has Shah Rukh Khan's name attached to it, then there's every reason for it to be termed as Big. Mudassar Aziz's directorial debut Dulha Mil Gaya has SRK in an important role while Sushmita Sen and Fardeen Khan play the main lead. This humorous take on relationships is set in Trinidad and both Sush and Fardeen are looking smoking hot. So, who's the Dulha? We guess there's a choice between the two Khans. What do you say!

Money Hai Toh Honey Hai

Choreographer Ganesh Acharya's next directorial venture Money Hai Toh Honey Hai promises to be a full-on commercial caper. What everyone is talking about is Govinda's pairing with Aap Ka Surroor star Hansika and how 'good' the two will look opposite each other considering their age difference. The film also stars Aftab Shivdasani, Celina Jaitley, Kim Sharma, Upen Patel and Manoj Bajpai. Let's see if this Honey makes loads of Money at the Box Office unlike Acharya's debut Swami.

Love Story 2050

Hunky debutante Harman Baweja is all set to make the biggest debut of 2008 with Sci-Fi style flick Love Story 2050 where he is paired with Priyanka Chopra. Lavishly shot in breathtaking locales in Australia and USA, this Love Story will find Chopra babe in a double role. Himesh Reshammiya's music will be a definite plus point of the film considering he has massively cut down on his work as a music director. Hey Future.....here comes our man, Her-Man....Harman!

Kismet Konnection

Jab Shahid and Vidya met, there had to be some connection...oops Konnection! Well, everybody is talking about the groovy romance brewing between the two since the time they started shooting for Aziz Mirza's romantic comedy Kismet Konnection. If the picture above is anything to go by then this duo makes for one adorable couple (on screen or otherwise). With Mirza's tender humour and a tinge of melodious music as the perfect garnishing, this Konnection has a bright Kismet at the ticket window. After all, both Shahid and Vidya have super hits behind them.

Golden star Ganesh

‘I visit my parents once every three months’

THE recent report that Golden Star Ganesh has ‘dumped’ his parents while leading the good life in namma Bengaluru has upset the actor. Ganesh, the report says, has left his parents who’ve sacrificed so much to give him a good future, to languish in their rented house in Adakamaranahalli (in Nelamangala) while he and his wife revel in the city’s nightlife.

The allegation was made by the producer of his superhit film Mungaru Male, E Krishnappa, whom Ganesh considers his godfather. When Mastii-Kustii called the actor, a distressed Ganesh said, “These allegations are baseless. I know what I am and so do my parents. My wife and I are happy, so there’s no need for people to speculate.”

Is it true he hasn’t visited his folks for a long time? “I’ve been living in Bangalore for the past eight years and I’ve been visiting them every three months. My parents visited my home twice after the wedding,” says the actor. “The threestoreyed house I’m constructing in my village is for my parents. Why would I want to build a house there for myself?” he asks.

About his mother being in tears when reporters spoke to her, he says, “When newsmen go to a village with cameras and ask them, ‘Tell us about your son’, they’ll obviously say, ‘Ask Ganesh’. I’ve helped my brother start a retail food outlet in Bangalore.Would I do that if I wasn’t on good terms with my family?” asks Ganesh. Is he upset with Krishnappa for making these comments? “I don’t want to clarify anything anymore. If I start, I’ll be doing that all my life,” says the actor.

Ganesha mathe TV ge banda

NAMSKARA, Namskara, Namskara. Remember namma Golden Star Ganesh’s greeting on his hit TV show, Comedy Time? That was the very phrase that shot him to fame before he became an actor. Now G is all set to make another splash on television. “It’s a one-of-its-kind show and the concept has never been tried on the small screen before. It will be an interactive programme with the public,” the actor tells us.

The going’s certainly good for Gani. He’s also been signed as a brand ambassador of a leading telecom service provider. It’s also the first time that a Kannada actor has received an extension of the contract from the stipulated one year. The actor will shortly endorse a biscuit brand and a chocolate as well. “I was approached to be the face of a liquor company. I refused even though I was offered Rs 1 crore for it,” emphasises Gani.

On the work front, Ganesh is currently shooting for the Ravi Varma Gubbi directorial, Sangama. “It’s the first time that Telugu’s top music director Devi Sri Prasad is scoring music for a Kannada film,” Gani informs us.

And we hear producer SV Babu is pulling out all the stops to make it a typical Ganesh entertainer — even Devi Sri Prasad was paid a whopping Rs 70 lakh!

Ganesh gifts Shilpa a play!

When Golden Star Ganesh celebrated his birthday recently, wife Shilpa threw him a surprise midnight party. But when Shilpa celebrated her big day on July 11, Ganesh seemed to have forgotten to arrange a bash. Or so Shilpa thought. Until the star, who had taken his wife out for a quiet dinner, brought her home. “I had just unlocked the door when I walked into a house full of fancy candles — Ganesh had lit up the entire house. And then I see this tall guy with a crown and totally freaked out! It was one of Ganesh’s friends who was in the guise of Hanuman for a play that they staged later in the night. I found it really cute. We watched the play, gorging on Chinese food, which he had called for because it’s my favourite,” gushes Shilpa. And friends and family came over later on, and the party just got bigger. Cute!

Ganesh does a Shahid

It’s not just folks in B-Town like Shahid Kapur who’re following a green diet. The trend has caught on in Sandalwood too. Like the other day, when we met Golden Star Ganesh at a party, his plate was loaded with veggies and fruits. “I’ve been following a strict diet and have skipped meat for a healthier lifestyle. I restrict my intake of carbs and drink fresh juice often. And it’s only oats for breakfast,” said G. And it’s not to acquire a six-pack, but to cut down fat, laughed the actor.

PS: Suna hai ki wife Shilpa is a culinary expert and her Mangalorean kori gassi and neer dosa are to die for!

‘Nanage naane sarisaati’

Seven huge hits in a row. And he’s busy working on more big films. Ganesh, the number one hero of Kannada films, tells mastii-kustii what it’s like to be on top ....

Hit mele hit mele hit...

The success of a film is not because of one Ganesh. It just so happens that I’m in that particular movie. It’s all teamwork. I just do my job. The credit must go to everybody — the directors, the crew, every single person who’s been involved in the movie. Not to forget the audience, who determine the success of a film.

Number one and no competition...

I don’t think of competition like that. I only compete with myself for better scripts and projects. That’s my way. It’s ultimately the audience that decides the fate of a film. I just go by the reasoning that if it’s a good film then people will go and watch it. It’s not that it has to be a Ganesh film. If another actor had done Mungaru Male, it would have been just as much of a hit. My responsibility is only to my audience. I’m always thinking of how I can entertain them with each of my films. Every film is like my first and I give it my very best.

After the wedding that made headlines...

We couldn’t go on a honeymoon. Right after the wedding I had to go to Austria to shoot for Bombat, so I took Shilpa along with me. If I am in Bangalore, Sundays are set aside for Shilpa. It’s her day. Now, my wife is also my best critic.

Next release...

It’s Bombat and total entertainment. Every scene will impress people. I’ve finished shooting and the movie will release in August. The songs have been shot in Italy and Austria. My birthday is on July 2 and that’s when the Bombat audio release will happen. I’ll celebrate my birthday with my team.

Working with Ramya...

She’s a very nice girl and I enjoyed working with her.

Lined up...

Right now I am on a 10-day break from shooting. I am discussing my other project, Circus, with director Dayal, the executive producer of Gaalipata, who’s known in the industry as Drakula. This is a big budget film and you’ll see me in a different avatar. As I finish one movie, I start discussions for my next script.

Movies, movies...

I am shooting for Sangama, in which I play a lover boy. It’s directed by Ravi Varma and the music is by Devi Sri Prasad, who has composed for several hugely successful Telugu films, such as Shankar Dada MBBS, Bommarilu, Varsham and Jalsa.

Profile of Gaensh:

He was born in Adakamaranahalli near Nelamangala town. His father's name is Kishan, and mother, Sulochana from Bellary, and grand-mother Sithamma. And in the tele serial Yadhwa Thadwa produced by Sihi Kahi Chandru, Ganesh showed his prowess in imitating Balanna many a times. But his real popularity came when he started doing the Comedy Time programme in the Popular Kannada Channel UDAYA TV.

It was Ganesh who popularised the television program Comedy Time and he got obtained thousands of fans through this one programme. Ganesh won the hearts of the viewers by his distinict dialogue delivery, unique gestures and his affectionate interaction with viewers. Viewers also thought that Ganesh is the best choice for the anchor of this programme and the popularity of this programme increased.

Then the anchor would call the their number, disguising himself as someone else and fool them. After reading each letter a comedy scene from a chosen kannada film was telecasted in the interim. His unique style of greeting the viewers at the start and end of the program was also very popular, especially with children He started the programme by telling Namaskara.. Namasakra, Namaskaara which is still being referred by the fans when he is around.

Even while he was doing the compering job, Ganesh was acting in films and also working in tele serials. And now, it's Kannada Rap!

Something is completely right with the way the usage of Kannada is increasing in register after linguistic register. The doomsayers are being proven wrong again.

Yeah, we've now got Kannada Rap, a new form of music to most Kannada listeners.A band called "Urban Lads" based in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, has come out with an ultra-cool "Kanglish" rap album which is making waves all over the world even before the album is out for sale, before the lads have a website and even before there's more concrete proof than the circulating mp3 that they actually exist.

To those who think "these fellows are destroying the beauty of Kannada", my message is that the whole philosophy that the Kannada tongue needs to be "protected" from other languages unto death is flawed.

These experiments are what keep the language alive. These experiments are what keep the language current. No language can live in isolation. Kannada is no exception. And the rise of Kanglish rap is a positive, not negative development.

As Kannada Rap evolves, and evolve it will like the now absolutely hip Kannada film music, the Englishness of Kanglish will evolve towards more Kannadaness. One remembers Dr. Raj's "If you come today, it's too early" as an early example of the thinking that anything hip around Vidhana Soudha needs to be in pure English -- a thinking which Dr. Raj himself never shared, but was led to make believe by directors (according to his own words).

Now, Kannada songs are whole lot hipper, and the hippest of 'em a whole lot Kannada-er.To the brand of purists who are convinced that rap itself is a degradation of music, our message is that they've probably reached a wrong blog post thinking we talk about the fineties, subtleties and otherties of music. We don't.

The number of linguistic registers in which Kannada is being used is on a steady rise. We got Kannada TV channels, putting an end to the Hindi drudgery we went through during the days of DD. We got FM radio after putting up with a brief period of lapse of reason in the programmers' camp.

We got good newspapers who have finally started breaking loose of the clutches of the purists and are coming up with catchy headlines. We've started to get ads on electronic media (although they remain cheap translations of Hindi or Tamil).

And now, it's Kannada Rap.By the way, the first Kannada Rap number was Auto Soori, not this one from the Urban Lads. Take it down as a history trivia question for 2020!
